Frequently asked questions
The basics
What is WheelPlaces?
A free directory and map of places a wheelchair user can get into: restaurants, cafés, shops, hotels, gyms, medical offices and more. Every listing meets our minimum entry standard and shows a detailed Yes / No / Unknown accessibility profile.
Does “listed” mean a place is fully accessible?
No. A listing means a contributor confirmed a step-free entrance, a wide entrance door and accessible pathways inside the main area. Bathrooms, parking and seating are listed separately — check them, and call ahead if a detail matters. Read more about our standard.
What does “Unknown” mean?
Nobody has confirmed that detail yet. We never guess.
Do I need an account?
Not to browse. You need a free account to add places, upload photos, write reviews, save favorites, ask questions, make requests and report problems.
Adding places and photos
How do I add a place?
Choose Add a Place, fill in the address and accessibility details, add as many photos as you like, and submit.
Why is my place “awaiting review”?
New places and photos from members are checked by a moderator or administrator before they appear on the site. Moderators and administrators publish immediately. You can see the status of everything you added in your account.
Can I add more than one photo?
Yes — select several photos at once (up to 12 per upload), say what each one shows, and remove any you don’t want before sending. You can add more any time from the listing page. Please don’t include people’s faces.
What kinds of accounts are there?
There are three:
- Member: anyone who signs up. You can add places, upload photos, write reviews, ask questions and report problems. New places and photos are checked before they go live.
- Moderator: trusted members chosen by administrators. Their places and photos go live right away, and they approve or decline what other members submit, edit listings and answer questions.
- Administrator: runs the site and can do everything, including managing accounts and roles.
How do I become a moderator?
Keep adding accurate places with clear photos. Administrators review contributors regularly and invite people with a good track record to moderate.
Questions, requests and reports
How do I ask about a specific place?
Open the listing and scroll to Questions & requests. Any member can ask a question (“Is the side door open on Sundays?”) or make a request (“Could someone add a bathroom photo?”). Moderators, administrators and the person who added the place can answer.
A place changed — what should I do?
Use Report a problem on the listing and tell us what you saw, for example that the ramp was removed during renovations.
What happens after I report something?
The listing is flagged “Recently reported” and an administrator reviews it. When 3 different people report the same kind of problem, it takes effect automatically:
- Temporarily closed or under renovation — a warning notice appears on the listing.
- Not accessible, accessibility changed, or permanently closed — the listing is hidden from search until an administrator checks it.
Each person counts once per listing, so reports can’t be stacked by one account.
Can the community change a listing’s details?
Yes. On any listing, choose Been here? Check the details and mark what you saw for any detail, such as whether the ramp is still there. If enough different visitors say a detail no longer matches the listing, and they outnumber the people confirming it, the listing updates on its own. Each person has one vote per detail, and you can change yours any time.
While votes are coming in, the listing shows how many people disagree. If a change means the place no longer meets our entry standard, it’s hidden from search and an administrator is alerted.
What does “May be outdated” mean?
Nobody has re-checked the place in the last 12 months. If you visit, consider confirming or reporting what you found.
